How Long Is the GRE®?

The GRE® General Test takes just under two hours from the first question to the last, and there’s no scheduled break. The length and format is the same whether you test at home or in a test center.

That said, test day itself will run longer than the exam due to security and check-in protocols, and a lot of online advice still describes a version of the GRE® that hasn’t existed since 2023. Here’s the full picture.

GRE® Timing, Section by Section

The exam has five sections.

The Analytical Writing section always comes first. After that, the verbal and quant sections can appear in any order.

There’s No Break, So Plan for That

The current GRE® runs straight through. No scheduled break means no built-in moment to eat or reset, other than a one-minute pause between sections. When doing your prep, plan and practice for this so you can build your mental stamina. Practice strings of questions, pair quant sets back-to-back with verbal sets, and make sure you take your practice tests under perfect exam conditions, which means absolutely no pausing. Being able to concentrate for two hours without getting distracted is a distinct skill.

How Long Does GRE® Test Day Actually Take?

Budget for more than two hours. At a test center, plan for roughly two and a half hours in the building: you’ll arrive about 30 minutes early, and check-in involves ID verification, a photograph, a locker for your belongings, and security screenings that can include emptying your pockets or a palm scan.

The at-home version requires you to check in with your proctor about 20 minutes before your exam, so that you can undergo an ID check, a room scan, and a look at your screen.

Why Some Sources Say the GRE® Takes Four Hours

If you read this somewhere on the internet, it refers to an older version of the exam. Before ETS shortened the GRE® in September 2023, it ran about 3 hours and 45 minutes across six sections, including two writing tasks instead of one, 20 questions per verbal and quant section, an unscored section that didn’t count toward your score, and a 10-minute break in the middle.

That’s nearly twice the current length, which is why old advice can be so misleading. If a study guide, forum post, or pacing strategy assumes 20-question sections or a 10-minute mid-test break, it predates the current exam, and its timing advice won’t transfer. When something mentions GRE® timing, it’s worth checking the date on it.

One nice side effect of the change: the current GRE® has no unscored experimental section, so every question you answer counts toward your score.
