How Long Should You Study for the GMAT?

There’s no universal answer, and anyone who gives you a confident one is guessing. It depends almost entirely on the gap between your starting score and your target score. Many of our successful students study for two to six months, averaging about two focused hours a day, but each student’s experience varies greatly.

To understand how much time you might need, start by measuring the gap between your current score and your target score by taking an official practice exam. If you need to gain 50 or more points, buckle in for the long haul.

When preparing for the exam, prioritize quality, not just quantity. We talk about this in Don’t Half-Ass Your GMAT Practice: two focused hours nearly always beat six exhausted ones. We’ve almost never seen a fifth daily hour of studying help; instead, it usually just reinforces bad habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to study for the GMAT?

Usually a few months, at about two focused hours a day, but it depends heavily on the gap between your current score and your target score. Measure that gap with a cold practice test first.

How many hours should I study for the GMAT?

Around two focused hours a day, prioritizing quality over quantity. More hours don’t reliably translate into more points.

Can I study for the GMAT in one month?

If you’re already near your target score with solid fundamentals, maybe. If you have a big score gap, plan for longer.
