How Much Does a GMAT Tutor Cost?

Private GMAT tutoring runs anywhere from $20 an hour to several hundred, and price tells you surprisingly little about quality. Our rate is $320 an hour for most of our tutors. More details are available here. Here’s what actually drives tutoring prices, and how to decide what price is worth paying. 

What GMAT Tutoring Costs

There’s no standard rate card for GMAT tutoring. A few things push the price up or down:

• Specialization. A dedicated GMAT specialist typically charges more than a general math or test-prep tutor, and is usually worth the difference on an exam this quirky. 
• Experience. Tutors with decades of GMAT-specific teaching, and a track record they can talk about honestly, usually sit at the higher end. 
• Independent vs. large firm. Big firms bundle materials and brand-name assurance into their rates; independents price their own way, which produces most of the range. 
• Hourly vs. package pricing. Some tutors sell single hours; others sell structured packages. Packages usually lower the per-hour price but raise the upfront commitment. 

Why Price Doesn’t Equal Quality

We’ve met spectacular teachers who massively undercharge, and horrendous ones who charge several hundred dollars an hour. Aggressive pricing often reflects marketing confidence, not teaching skill, so don’t read a high rate as proof of quality, and don’t read a low one as proof of inexperience. What You’re Actually Paying For

Good tutoring is expensive because you’re buying two scarce things: time and an expert diagnosis. A skilled tutor will efficiently identify the specific issues holding your score back, including the ones you can’t see yourself, and then every hour of studying will be laser-focused on remedying those weaknesses. That’s why it isn’t necessarily helpful to frame the purchasing decision as tutor vs. course; it’s often better to think of it as tutor vs. months of your own trial and error. One warning while you’re comparing prices: be skeptical of anyone justifying a premium rate with guaranteed score jumps or suspiciously tidy improvement statistics. On the GMAT, nobody can honestly guarantee results.
