GRE® Quantitative Reasoning Explained
The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE is designed to test your ability to reason. Sure, you’ll need some basic math knowledge to get through it, but the content itself isn’t all that advanced. Most of problems are drawn from high school algebra and geometry, with absolutely no calculus or trigonometry required. On top of which, you’ll have an on-screen calculator throughout, taking the edge off any painful arithmetic. So if math content isn’t the problem, what makes the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE a challenge?
In a nutshell, it’s how the question are asked. The fact that they’re specifically written to be misread. The way they smash divergent concepts together in surprising ways, forcing you to think on your feet. And let’s not forget the ticking clock, which leaves roughly two minutes to solve each question. To score well under those conditions, you’ll not only have to be accurate, you’ll have to perform efficiently under pressure.
For all those reasons, it’s important to tailor your Quant prep to the unique demands of the test. While these demands shouldn’t be underestimated, the Quantitative Reasoning section can ultimately be conquered through developing the right habits. You’ll want to study not just hard, but smart.

What’s on the GRE Quant Section?
You’ll see two Quantitative Reasoning sections on test day. The first gives you 21 minutes to complete 12 questions, while the second gives you 26 minutes for 15 questions. Overall, that’s 47 minutes for 27 questions, yielding a little under two minutes per question. Within each section, you can move around freely, skipping questions as needed, reviewing them later, and changing your answers. There’s absolutely no penalty for jumping around.
The Four Topic Areas
ETS groups GRE Quant questions into the following four categories:
- Arithmetic. This topic consists of number properties, such as divisibility and factorization; arithmetic operations, including exponents and roots; and related concepts such as percents, ratios, and sequences.
- Algebra. This topic encompasses various types of equations, inequalities, and word problems.
- Geometry. Concepts tested here include lines, angles, triangles, circles, polygons, solids, and coordinate geometry. The GRE likes questions built around a figure, so get comfortable analyzing diagrams. Our geometry guide covers this topic in more detail.
- Data analysis and statistics. This category encompasses two different question types. The first types consists of statistics-based questions, which draw on concepts such as mean, median, range, and standard deviation. The second types consists of data analysis problems, which present a graph and/or table followed by a handful of questions that require you to analyze the data.
The Two Kinds of GRE Quant Questions
GRE quant questions can be divided into the following broad formats:
Problem Solving:
All questions in this format present a short question stem you must answer. However, the way you answer them varies. In some cases, the question stem is followed by five answer choice options, one of which is correct (i.e., a standard multiple choice question). In other cases, there may be more or fewer than five options, with multiple correct answers. A third cases omits answer choices entirely, requiring you to type in the answer yourself.
Quantitative Comparison:
This format is unique to the GRE. In each Quantitative Comparison question, you’ll be given two quantities and asked you to compare their value. In each case, your job is to pick one of the following answer choices, which are the same for every Quantitative Comparison question:
- Quantity A is greater.
- Quantity B is greater.
- The two quantities are equal.
- The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
In some cases, you can simply calculate the two quantities and compare them. In other cases, you might need to compare variables, at which point your job gets more interesting. Because even if you can’t pin down exact values for each quantity, you might still be able to prove that one is always bigger than the other. In yet other cases, you might simply be given insufficient information to draw a conclusion, at which point the correct answer would be D (i.e. the relationship cannot be determined from the information given). Do You Get a Calculator on GRE Quant?
During both quant sections, you’ll be given an on-screen calculator that performs the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The calculator can also calculate square roots, including decimal approximations of non-perfect squares. This is obviously a nice tool to have, as it take the pressure of arithmetic computations. At the same time, it can be clumsy and inefficient, so you don’t want to over-rely on it. Keep in mind that most GRE quant questions don’t require complex calculations anyway, particularly if you approach them in a clever way. As a result, if you find yourself using the calculator a lot, you’ll probably want to work on finding better solution paths.

How GRE Quant Scoring Works
Unlike the math tests you took in high school or college, the GRE Quantitative Reasoning section is adaptive. In other words, the difficulty of the test changes based on how you perform. If you perform well, the test will “adapt up” and give you harder stuff. If you perform badly, the test will “adapt down” and give you easier stuff. Your scaled score (which is what really matters) depends not on your raw score (your percentage of correct answers), but on the difficulty of the questions you get right or wrong. Getting easy questions right won’t help your score much, but missing them will kill your score. Getting harder questions right helps your score a lot, but missing them doesn’t hurt you that much.
So how exactly does the GRE adapt? In fact, the test isn’t “question adaptive,” but “section adaptive.” In other words, the test won’t adapt up or down within a section, but only between sections. More specifically, your first Quantitative Reasoning section will always be of medium difficulty. If you do well on this first section, the computer will recognize your skill level and give you the “hard” second section. On the other hand, if give a mediocre performance on the first quant section, you’ll get the “medium” second section. If you do poorly on the quant first section, you’ll get the “easy” second section.
To maximize your score, you’ll always want to get the “hard” second section. That’s because
the scoring model underneath the GRE is sensitive to which exact questions you get wrong, which matters as much as, if not more than, how many you get wrong. If you get an easy question wrong, the algorithm treats that as strong evidence that you’re not able to handle that level of question, and drops your score ceiling accordingly. Get enough easy and medium questions wrong, and you’ll never see the harder questions on the test. And if that happens, you’ll be stuck with a low score.
The GRE’s Quantitative Reasoning section is scored on a 130 to 170 scale, and is reported separately from Verbal. As a rough guide, 170 is a perfect Quant score, 150 is below average, and 160 is where many programs start treating a quant score as strong. That said, be careful with general benchmarks. Some programs barely look at quant because verbal matters more to them. Other programs care most about your quant score. Depending on their academic requirements, they might prefer a quant score even higher than 160, or they could be satisfied with a lower number. Check the programs you plan to apply to and see what they expect – that should form the basis of your score goal.
Why a High GRE Quant Score Doesn’t Stand Out the Way It Used To
There’s a trend in GRE quant scoring you should understand before you set a target: perfect scores in this section have become far more common in recent years.
The test creators, ETS, publish reports each year on GRE test-takers and how they did. Around 2015, less than 2% of GRE test-takers scored a 170 on quant. In 2025, nearly 12% of test-takers reached that coveted perfect score.
Said another way: a perfect score on GRE quant will only garner you an 89th percentile score. By our calculators, the raw number of perfect quant scorers rose by 174%.
Because of this score deflation, the same scaled score now buys you less standing than it did a decade ago. 160 on Quant used to be the ideal benchmark for many programs – now, a 160 equates to a 50th percentile.

How to Prepare for GRE Quant
Refresh the fundamentals as needed. If you’ve been out of school for a while, some rust is normal. Do a refresher on arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, and go from there.
Aim for near-perfect process. A strong quant score comes from having an ironclad process and clean execution. If you have small weak spots in a topic, that’s completely survivable. What you can’t afford are careless mistakes. To succeed on test day, you’ll want to nail every question that’s in your wheelhouse.
Manage your time wisely. The GRE lets you move freely within each section, so use that to your advantage. The moment you’re feeling stuck on a question, flag it, guess, and move on. Don’t waste precious minutes trying to push through a question you might end up missing anyway. To maximize your score, nail down the gettable points first. Then, if time remains, you can always return to the most difficult ones.
Use official ETS material. ETS questions have a specific way of testing concepts. The wording and logic are designed carefully and with considerable investment, which third-party questions can’t quite match.
